For Immediate Release

Bruce Hartzfeld Sr. was the lone new face in Victory Lane Saturday night as he took the checkers first in the KEN SCHAFFER EXCAVATING PRO STOCKS. Others were all repeat winners, including Denny Fenton in the SROCK CONTRACTING SUPER LATE MODELS, BJ Hudson in the GIO'S BBQ SEMI-LATES, Bob McMillen in the ECONOMODS, Tim Steis in the D FENTON FABRICATION & MECHANICAL PURE STOCKS, and Brett Hanley in the BROOKS SERVICES 4-CYLINDERS.
59 cars were on hand for the night’s racing action as things got underway on a sweltering night that saw trophies sponsored by Fire Now Church. Prior to the racing program, back-to-school bags were given away at the Ken Schaffer Excavating Kids Club thanks to numerous sponsors who donated funds.
After preliminary qualifying events, the D Fenton Fabrication & Mechanical Pure Stocks were the first to take to the track for their feature race with Devin Dickey and Noah Bloom on the front row. Dickey led the first lap, but Tim Steis took over on lap two and never gave up the lead for the rest of the event. Dickey was still second on lap five with Jake Foradori challenging him for the position and being able to work his way by. At the halfway mark it was Steis, Foradori, Dickey, Mitch Stiles, and Andrew Frey up front. Several laps later Dickey & Stiles ran side-by-side in a battle for the third spot, with Stiles eventually prevailing. As the checkered flag flew it was Steis taking home the win followed by Foradori, Stiles, Dickey, & Frey. The green to checkered run with no cautions took less than five minutes to complete as the competitors put on an action-packed show. Heat race winners were Frey, Dustin Challingsworth, and Stiles.
Next up were the Gio’s BBQ Semi Lates. Kyle Shannon and Doug Surra led the field to flagman Earl Jackson’s green flag. Surra got the early jump as he led the first lap, followed by Shannon, BJ Hudson, and Tyler Rougeux. As Surra was in control several laps later, Shannon remained second and Nick Erskine ran side-by-side with Rougeux as he tried to wrestle third place away from the youngster. Rougeux was able to hold him off and maintain the position. A lap nine caution bunched the field back up and gave everyone another shot at Surra who had built up a sizeable lead. Hudson tried to get by Shannon for second, and Shannon clipped an infield tire causing a caution. He had to be towed to the pits with front end damage. On the restart it wa still Surra in control, but he suffered a flat tire on lap eleven and pulled to the infield, ending his night. Hudson inherited the lead and led the rest of the way. In the end it was Hudson, Rougeux, Erskine, Rich Runyan Jr., and Jeremy Lippert making up the top five. Surra and Shannon won the heat races.
Denny Fenton and Paul Kot led the Srock Contracting Super Late Models onto the track for their feature event. As the green flag flew, contact in the back of the field caused a caution on the first lap. Dylan Fenton suffered damage and was pushed to the pits, ending his night. Denny Fenton led and was never challenged throughout the entire race as he led from green to checkered. Kot was running second and Ken Schaffer third until Kot suffered a mechanical failure and had to be towed off just past the halfway mark. Clay Ruffo was able to get by Schaffer for second and in the end it was Fenton, Ruffo, and Schaffer. The lone heat race was won by Denny Fenton.
The Ken Schaffer Excavating Pro Stocks were up next and, after some exciting action in the heat races, fans were anxious to see the feature. Jim Bloom and Bruce Hartzfeld Sr. (subbing in Gary Miller’s #1M car) were on the front row. They ran side-by-side battling for the lead on the first lap, with Hartzfeld coming out on top. Several early cautions slowed the pace with Hartzfeld continuing to show the way, followed by Bloom, Denny Curry, Nate Brady, and Rich Howell. A scary accident on lap eight saw Bruce Hartzfeld Jr. (driving his dad’s #101 car) make contact with the frontstretch wall and take a nasty flip. He was unhurt but done for the evening as the car suffered major damage and was towed to the pits. When green flag racing resumed it was still Hartzfeld Sr. in control and with five laps to go he held a 1.3 second lead over Bloom, Curry, Jim Challingsworth, & Brady. As the race ended Brady was able to get back by Challingsworth and it was Hartzfeld Sr., Bloom, Curry, Brady, & Challingsworth making up the top five. Heat race winners were Hartzfeld Sr. and Bloom.
Brett Hanley and Devon Trayer were on the front row of the 15-car field for the Brooks Services 4-Cylinder feature. Hanley led lap one with Bruce Long challenging Trayer for second. Long took that spot and set his sights on the leader, getting by Hanley on the next lap. By lap six the leaders were closing in on the back of the field and would have to negotiate through lapped traffic. But a caution brought everyone back together and Long was able to maintain the lead. Just a few laps later, Trayer had a mechanical issue and lost a tire, then Long had problems with his car. Isaac Exley was the new leader, with Hanley, newcomer Josh Whetstone, Cody Hetrick, and KC Dunkle giving chase. With five laps remaining, Hanley tried to get by Exley and the two ran side-by-side. As a caution came out, the two passed the flagstand with Hanley ahead by .001 second at the electronic scoring loop, giving him the lead for the restart. Several more cautions ensued, and as the race was checkered it was Hanley, Exley, Whetstone, Hetrick, & Dunkle with the top five spots. Hanley, Trayer, & Exley copped the heats.
Rounding out the evening’s racing action was the feature for the Economod class. A light turnout saw only three cars take the green and the order they started was how they finished as Bob McMillen took the win by more than ten seconds over Kevin Vanderhoof and Cory Wolfe. McMillen also won the heat race.
Next week will be Season Championship night, with double points on the line for several close battles in the season-long point races. The track will then take a week off for the Labor Day holiday weekend, and conclude the season with a late model special on September 6th. more details will be available soon.
