The End Of An Era At Hummingbird Speedway

Reynoldsville- It was the end of an era Saturday night at Hummingbird Speedway as the track held its final event with the running of the Dave Srock Memorial. Dave "Grumpy" Srock was a longtime racer in the region whose name and legacy are still remembered within the local racing community today. The Srock Contracting Late Models took center stage with a $4,000/win, $600/start special. Semi Late Models were permitted to run with the Super Lates with the top 5 finishing Semi Lates splitting a $1,000 bonus. There was a $250 Fast Time Award that was given to the fastest driver in time trials which was the #13X of Kenny Schaffer. There was a $500/win King of the Hill run for the Late Models with the #5L of Jon Lee coming out on top. Alongside the Late Model special were three other specials including $1,215/win Pure Stocks, $1,000/win Four-Cylinders, and $800/win Pro Stocks. The #88 of Josh Fields made it a perfect 6 for 6 as he took the checkers in the Pure Stock special, capping off a dominant season in which he won all 6 races run at the Bird. Unfortunately, Mother Nature arrived during the first couple laps of the Late Model special which forced the cancellation of the three remaining specials.
The Pure Stocks took to the track first at feature time for the 20-lap, $1,215/win, and $100/start special. Dustin Challingsworth and newcomer Bruno Mowery led the field of 26 of the best Pure Stock drivers from across western PA and NY to flagman Earl Jackson's green flag. Mowery edged out to the lead on the start and led lap 1 by about half a car length over Challingsworth with 2026 Track Champion Josh Fields following behind them in third. On lap 2, Challingsworth was able to make the pass to the inside of Mowery in turns 3 and 4 for the lead as Fields tried to follow him through, but was unable to do so before a caution for a wreck on the frontstretch later that lap. After another quick caution flag, Fields was able to use the high line to his advantage to power past both Mowery and Challingsworth to take the race lead on lap 3. Challingsworth was able to work back ahead of Fields on lap 4 as the top two continued to race side-by-side. Fields was able to retake the top spot on the highside on lap 5 just before another caution flag was displayed. Mowery was able to work his way past Challingsworth for second on lap 6 before a caution for a spin in turn 2. At the halfway mark on lap 10, it was still Fields leading the way over Mowery and Challingsworth. There were a couple of additional cautions throughout the second half of the race, but neither phased Fields as he held on to complete a perfect season at the Bird, winning all 6 Pure Stock races run this year. The win was Fields' 46th career Pure Stock victory at Hummingbird which leads all drivers in the division and is 17 more than any other driver. Mowery, Challingsworth, Joe Skinner, and Darr Diegelman rounded out the top 5.
Rain began to fall within the first couple of laps of the Late Model feature as mentioned earlier and persisted to ultimately cancel the rest of the racing action. The following are the winners of all of the heat races and last chance qualifiers that were run in the Late Model, Pro Stock, and Four-Cylinder divisions. Jon Lee, Ethan Thompson, Paul Kot, and Colton Flinner won the Late Model heat races. There were two Last Chance Qualifiers that were run due to there being 36 cars with Orvis Newcome and Craig Bainey picking up the wins in each. Andrew Gordon and Fuzzy Fields took the checkers in the heat races for the Pro Stocks. Shawn Hadden, Zach Lennox, Greg Kiehl, Camden Frantz, and Collin Mills were all victorious in the heat races for the Four-Cylinders. Due to there being 38 cars in attendance, there were also two Last Chance Qualifiers run with Scott Robison and Justin Forsythe getting the wins in each. As there was no rain date for this show, it was complete and all teams were paid.
Speedway Notes: 115 cars packed the pit area for the Dave Srock Memorial. That breaks down to: 26 Pure Stocks, 36 Late Models, 15 Pro Stocks, and 38 Four-Cylinders. This was not just the final event of the 2026 season, but also the end of an era since the track will not reopen in 2027. The track is for sale and more information on that will be forthcoming.
